Top 5 Considerations When Selecting Racks and Cabinets for Your Data Center

Datacenter densities are increasing due to the growing IT and business demands. That’s why data managers keep adding their capacity to stay ahead of the curve. Statistics show that 82% of companies make significant savings by moving to the cloud. So, if you manage a data center or have your network, it has to be correctly configured.

Part of this entails having the right rack shelves to cater for your current and future needs. There are different types of server racks available in the market, and sometimes it can be challenging selecting the right one.

Here are some of the things to consider when searching for server racks and cabinets for a data center.

1. Take Note of the Weight

Before you order shelving for your server rack, you should consider the weight limit of the equipment being stored. Different types of server racks are designed with the maximum weight they can hold. Selecting a rack that isn’t strong enough can result in costly damages to your equipment if the shelf breaks.

Racks designed with 30 lb. limits are designed for keyboards. While they may be light, they still have to support the user’s arms and hands while typing. Network racks with 60lb limits are lightweight but can comfortably hold a keyboard, monitor, computer and other basic equipment. The 95 lb. shelf racks (medium duty) are ideal for multiple PCs and servers.

Any shelve rack from 200lbs and above can handle stacks of monitors, computers, servers, and any other equipment you may need.

2. Cooling and Airflow Management

When exploring the different types of server racks, you should go for those that provide airflow and cooling management. This is because they provide an ideal environment for handling your equipment while keeping power consumption at the minimum. Given that there is bound to be higher heat loads, a rack should have higher levels of cabinet door perforations to maximize airflow.

3. Fixed or Sliding Rack Shelves

You have to figure out if you want your shelves to slide up or down (or in and out). If you can have a rack that slides in and out, it’s easy to troubleshoot issues, run new cables, and clean servers to avoid debris and dust. You can also make changes to the rack as needed, but you don’t have to disconnect the equipment.

Fixed shelving can be beneficial as it prevents accidental movement when working in the rack. They’ve also got more storage units at a low price. If you’re planning to install the racks to be used for a long time, fixed shelves are a great option.

4. Shape and Size

Shelve racks come in different sizes and shapes, and selecting the right one ensures that your equipment is housed safely without taking up any unnecessary space. You should consider getting racks that provide enough room when working on different equipment. This is necessary if the rack is going to house a router, switches, or servers.

5. Extra Equipment

When making your selection on the different types of server racks, you have to consider those that can help keep your equipment safe and organized. There are a few items that are affordable and can help you avoid any issues along the way. Here are a few worth mentioning.

Cable straps – These straps bind different cables for better organization. This can be done before they go into the cable path or once the cable is out of the equipment.

Anti-slip mats – Anti-slip mats ensure that the equipment is intact while working on it before it’s bolted in.

Transport straps – These straps help in securing the network equipment in place as its being transported to avoid any accidental damage.

Electronics’ rack and cabinet are essential equipment in any data center. It’s therefore vital that you carefully select the right type for your needs so that you don’t suffer any damages. If you take into account the points highlighted in this article, you’ll have a functional, organized, and reliable data center.
